A legendary kayaker and former SEQ climber tells his amazing stories...

Kayak Dundee returns

Paul Caffyn and I joined forces briefly as climbers in Brisbane back in the late 1960s when we were both geology students at the University of Queensland. He once convinced me to paddle a Canadian canoe down the Brisbane River in flood. We capsized shortly after we started but survived to laugh about it later. He was a remarkable climber -- with several notable first ascents to his name -- but it was a few years later when he eased into the cockpit of a kayak that he really excelled with the first circumnavigation of New Zealand (where he had moved) in 1977. Then came first-time circumnavigations of Stewart Island, Australia, Great Britain, Japan and a solo journey along the coastline of Alaska, completing a two-decade assault making international paddling history.

Four volumes of his adventurous voyages are available through his website and he has asked me to pass on the details to those of you with a paddling bent, or who love to read about audacious adventurers -- Paul Caffyn certainly falls into that category.

Details for ordering each of the four volumes are below:

Dark side of the wave (Stewart Island) and The audacious adventures of Kayak Dundee (Alaska)

The Dreamtime voyage (Australia) and Obscured by waves (NZ South Island)
